Epic Systems is working with Microsoft to integrate generative AI technology into its electronic health record software for the first time, the companies said Monday. The EPIC team is continuing efforts to resolve this issue. In the interim, the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) has revised the CoC language in the informed consent templates and added language to the HIPAA Authorization to disclose that information may be shared with health care providers outside of UK with whom the participant has a treatment relationship. This impacts most National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded projects, since NIH began automatically issuing CoCs in December 2016. Epic is a well-known electronic health record (EHR) system provider that has been used by hospitals, independent practices, skilled nurses and businesses of all sizes. While most research data is separate from clinical information, some sensitive material is accessible, which limits the CoC’s protections. We found one positive association between EHR meaningful use and obesity screening (OR 3.5, 95 CI 1.742-6.917). Results showed that 95 of visits were to offices meeting EHR meaningful use criteria. However, the sharing practice may conflict with the protections afforded by a federal Certificate of Confidentiality (CoC).Ī CoC limits the release of research information beyond the authorized research team. Share Everywhere allows patients to share a one-time, web-based view of their health record from their healthcare organization with anyone they choose, and the individual viewing the record can use Share Everywhere to add documentation to a patient’s electronic health record. We analyzed 30,787 office visits, representing an annual estimate of 680 million national office visits. The Care Everywhere feature in EPIC may be used to securely share patient records with healthcare providers at organizations on the Care Everywhere Network. The purpose is to coordinate and facilitate informed clinical care. ![]() EPIC Electronic Health Record impact on Federally Funded Human Research
